Debra Abigail West, typically known as simply Debbie, is a chicken in Netflix's 2018 television series Lost in Space. She is adopted by Don West, and previously belonged to Hiroki Watanabe.
Plot summary[]
Season 1[]
Don adopts Debbie after she saves his life. She has a locator chip on her ankle, which allowed the Watanabes to find him just before an entire desert of black death almost dumped on his head. He considers her a lucky chicken. ("The Robinsons Were Here")
Before Don and John Robinson launch the stripped-down Jupiter 4, Don gives Debbie to Judy Robinson to care for her. Don also takes one of Debbie's feathers into space with him for luck. He gives Judy instructions on Debbie's feeding and told her that to put her to sleep, she could simply stroke her belly gently and she would purr. ("Trajectory")
When Judy needs to distract June Harris to save her mother Maureen Robinson, she uses Debbie to distract June Harris.[1]
Season 2[]
Debbie returns aboard the Jupiter 2 before launch and Don continues to care for her. When the Jupiter 2 return to the Resolute, Don asks the Robinsons to not mention Debbie to Livestock Migration, saying it's a "finders keepers" situation.[2] Will Robinson at one point leaves Elise Azevedo, saying that he has to go check on Debbie. Penny covers for his slip by describing Debbie to Elise as a "chick... with red hair."[3] Don is finally forced to reveal the presence of his chicken when the crew evacuates the Resolute in the wake of an impending Robot attack.[4]
Season 3[]
Debbie is now caged up with a large group of other chickens aboard the Resolute. Don calls her "beautiful," saying that he missed her and asking if she gets the respect she deserves. When asked how he can tell which one is his, he asks the questioner what kind of a father he thinks he is. He promises to see Debbie soon, saying that he loves her.[5]
Don keeps a feather of Debbie's with him and likes to rub it for luck.[6]
When Don and Debbie are stranded on the boggy planet, Don gets annoyed with Debbie for running ahead of him and pecking at strange alien worms.[7]
After everyone has finally settled down on Alpha Centauri, Don arrives for dinner with the Robinsons, the Robot and Grant Kelly, carrying Debbie with him. He apologizes for being late, saying that Debbie had gotten into a fight with a goat. Debbie's clucking punctuates their dinner conversation.[8]
Trivia[]
- Debbie is presumably named in tribute to Debbie the Bloop from the original Lost in Space series.
- Don describes her as being "over-dramatic sometimes" and often talks to her as if she can understand what he's saying.[9]
- In an interview regarding the series, Don West actor Ignacio Serricchio stated that the chicken was his favorite co-star describing her as on time, super well trained and super easy. He quipped that he tried to put her in every scene so that people didn't focus on him.[10]
