Debbie, also called the Bloop after the only sound it ever made, is a chimpanzee-like character on the original 1965 television series Lost in Space.
Appearance[]
Debbie is a small black-furred creature resembling an Earth chimpanzee but with long pointed ears and a large cranium.
Personality[]
Debbie is a sweet and gentle creature who grew quite fond of the Robinsons and eventually a deep bond with Penny, rarely ever being too far from her. She was also a bit cowardly and tended to hide away whenever danger presented itself.
Debbie also enjoyed receiving attention and playing with others, often doing tricks or learning from Penny. Her love of attention ultimately encouraged her to stay with Winimal Films to become a star.
History[]
Debbie first appeared in season one in the episode "Island in the Sky." Debbie is a native of the planet Priplanus and was discovered after the Jupiter 2 crashed there. She was found by Don and given to Penny. She then stayed with Penny from then on and the two rarely parted ways.
Debbie also appeared in a number of season two episodes; she is shown in cameos in a couple of season three episodes, but these scenes are clearly footage from earlier episodes. Following the apparent and perplexing destruction of planet Priplanus, Debbie was presumably the last of her kind.
Debbie made her final appearance in "Visit to a Hostile Planet" where she hid as the Jupiter 2 went into a time warp.
As later revealed in Innovation Comics Annual #2 "Whatever Happened To Baby Bloop?", after the Robinsons landed on a relatively Earth-like civilized world, they found themselves in the middle of an alien film production by Winimal Films who after seeing John Robinson in action, decided to make him the star of their next film, but after the director grew fond of Debbie, he instead decided to make Debbie the star of her own television show. Debbie and Penny then tearfully parted ways after realizing she would be better off with Winimal. Years later, Penny and Will would still tune into the broadcast frequencies of Wiminal's planet so they could watch reruns of Debbie's show and reminisce about old times together.
Trivia[]
- Debbie was played by Judy the Chimp; probably best remembered for her role as Dr. Tracy's pet on the 1966 TV series Daktari.
- The blarp from the 1998 Lost in Space film served as an updated re-imagining of Debbie the Bloop.
