| Casting Timeline: Core Cast {Sep 16 - Dec 15, 2016] |
|---|
| This is the Cast List as parallel to the original 1965 series
Fri Sep 16, 2016: Taylor Russell as Judy Robinson. Taylor was the first cast announcement & was made 51 years and 1 day after the airing of the first original episode of Lost in Space ‘The Reluctant stowaway’. Judy is Maureen's bi-racial daughter from her previous marriage. Tue Sep 20, 2016: Toby Stephens as John Robinson. Tue Sep 20, 2016: Maxwell Jenkins as Will Robinson. [cast on the same day as Toby Stephens] Wed Sep 28, 2017: Molly Parker as Maureen Robinson. Maureen Robinson is described as a fearless and brilliant aerospace engineer who makes the decision to bring her family to space for a chance at a new life on a better world. Tue Nov 22, 2016: Parker Posey as Dr. Smith. This caused a widespread furore amongst die-hard fans of the original show but Kevin Burns stated this was his idea to prevent the inevitable comparisons to Jonathan Harris’s interpretation of the original character that any male actor being cast in the role would have faced. Tue Dec 13, 2016: Ignacio Serricchio as Don West. Don West, a roughneck smuggling luxury goods on the side, would never have been chosen as one of the elite colonists of the new world but once thrown together with the Robinsons he finds in them the family he never thought he would find. Thu Dec 15, 2016: Mina Sundwall as Penny Robinson. This completes casting of the original characters. |
| Expansion of the Cast |
|---|
| For this incarnation of Lost in Space, Kevin Burns has addressed some of the more unlikely aspects of the original, such as the failed logic of sending a single family on a colony mission with only one breeding pair and that the original show fell victim to the 'English speaking Alien of the Week' trope as the original Robinsons had no other humans to interact with, seriously limiting story potential.
Kevin’s new approach, taken from his 1999 revival treatment and also used in John Woo's failed 2003 pilot, was to have the mission consist of a mother ship transporting many Jupiter colony ships to the as yet un-named new world [Likely an Alpha Centauri attendant planet] The 1st season involves the crash-down of a number of the Jupiter ships onto an alien world on the other side of a rip in space-time. This scenario creates other characters for the Jupiter 2 group to interact with, as well as providing a motive for the season long quest to reunite all the crash survivors, removing any need for implausible English speaking guest star 'aliens'. Based on Media Images released on Instagram and Twitter, a number of chariot vehicles with insignia were shown revealing the Jupiter 2 crew were accompanied on the planet by the crews of at least two more ships, Jupiters 4 and 11. |

All this masks the underlying fear that he’ll one day be found out — that he isn’t quite good enough. Yukari Komatsu ... Naoko Watanabe Adam Greydon Reid ... Peter Beckert Iain Belcher ... Evan |
