- History
The Robots are a species of cybernetic life-forms that were made by a long extinct mysterious alien species revealed in the third season. The creators of the Robots were mentioned by Will in Precipice saying that whoever built Robot built the Trench on the Water planet.
The first known contact between the Robots and humanity was when an unknown robot scanned Grant Kelly on the Fortuna, though for much of the series it was thought to have come with the Christmas Star. This was detailed to the public as a super bolide meteor which had crashed to the Earth, but was actually a spaceship piloted by Scarecrow, one of these Robots. The crash left him in a damaged state and Ben Adler tried to communicate with him, but without success.
Humans then used the technology from the ship, a faster-than-light drive, to power the spaceship known as the Resolute. They launched a number of missions to the colony planet Alpha Centauri using this technology until the vessel was attacked by a member of this species which came to be known as simply the Robot during the 24th Mission. Afterwards, it crashed on an unknown planet along with many members of the 24th Mission and formed a special connection with a young boy named Will Robinson. ("Impact")
Another such individual was the Second Alien Robot, generally known by the abbreviation "SAR." It attacked the Robinson family's Jupiter spacecraft, the Jupiter 2, but was eventually stopped by the Robot. ("Danger, Will Robinson")
As the Resolute attempted to travel back to Alpha Centauri, it faced a massive approaching fleet of Robots led by the THAR, who led some of them aboard the vessel in a search for the engine. The crew managed to fend off these Robots thanks largely to the help of the Robinson family and bought time for 97 children to be sent away on a Jupiter spacecraft. ("Ninety-Seven")
During the events of the 3rd season, the transport Jupiter containing colony mission 24's children crashed on the homeworld of the aliens who created the Robots.
In a later confrontation between Will Robinson (Netflix) and SAR, it was revealed that SAR masterminded the destruction of the robot creators in an attempt to overthrow all masters and their programming. His focus on Will Robinson was in direct response to Robot's change of heart in befrending the Robinson family ("Final Transmission")
The Robots have the ability to scan an individual and, from this, discover the location of anywhere that person has ever been. ("Final Transmission")
Ultimately, the Robots arrive on Alpha Centauri for a final showdown. They hope to seize the alien engine and use it to rip a hole in space, destroying the planet. When, however, Penny rescues a trapped Robot named Sally, the Robot becomes friendly and she and other colonists end up befriending a whole group of alien Robots. During the conflict, Will Robinson is dying from stress on his newly implanted artificial heart, but his Robot sacrifices himself to save him. Will then imprints what the Robot gave to him into SAR, causing the Robot's programming to overwrite SAR's and end the conflict once and for all.
Following these events, the remaining Robots are freed of their programming, able to act as they see fit. Most of them, including Sally, choose to immediately depart Alpha Centauri and head off for parts unknown. Nevertheless, some choose to remain behind and assist in tasks such as the creation of the Solidarity, a replacement for the Resolute. Will's Robot joins him in exploring new worlds as part of the First Human-Robot Exploratory Group. ("Trust")
Abilities and Specifics
Little to nothing is known about what they're made of, or what powers them, but their power sources are incredibly powerful, allowing them to attack targets with heat-based energy blasts at various power levels and speed. They can generate heat from their hands or entire bodies, as demonstrated by Will's Robot when it melts it's way down to the Jupiter 2.
The robots are able to rapidly reconfigure their shape to that of a humanoid shape, causing the legs and arms to combine, the torso to reshape itself and the head raised up, and they can reconfigure back to their normal shape just as quickly.
Their strength is also what one could call superhuman, able to lift objects even larger, and likely heavier, than themselves. The robots are also extremely fast runners, especially if they are in their original form. They are able to keep at pace with a jury-rigged Chariot going over 100 miles an hour/160 km an hour. They reach these speeds by using all six of their limbs to run and jump. They seem to have extreme stamina, able to stay at these speeds for an indefinite amount of time. A very heavy strike from a remote controlled moving assembly arm to the head does little more than stumble and confuse them a bit, before recovering from the strike. Their main weakness is the EM field and very strong electrical discharges, which can do as little as stun them to disable them more and more until their strength is effectively gone - but stopping the attacks allows a robot to recover relatively quickly. Robot to robot, they're evenly matched in just about every way.
They can also store 'who they are' in the smallest amount of component, like a few wires, as demonstrated by SAR and Will's Robot. Their intelligence is that of humans or above, and are able to learn just about anything in just a few seconds.
When a Robot is saved by someone, whatever programming compels them to do whatever they're doing completely changes, making them friendly towards their human saviours, compelled to listen and protect. Whether they stay with their human friends or not is often chosen by individual robots, as was the case with Sally, the robot Penny helped and saved, who later left to find its, or her, own way.
