Scarecrow is a recurring character on Netflix's Lost in Space.

As with Robot, Scarecrow is portrayed by Brian Steele.

He was named by Ben Adler after the character from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Based on this, Hastings taunted him, saying that he thought that Scarecrow had a brain and that "Tin Man" (Robot) had a heart. ("Evolution")

History[]

On December 21, 2044, an unknown Robot, possibly Scarecrow himself, found the Fortuna in space above the shattered planet. The Robot scanned Grant Kelly and was able to determine Earth's location from him. As a result, Scarecrow and his ship were sent to Earth, possibly on a mission to wipe it out as the Robots had done to their creators. ("Final Transmission")

However, for reasons unknown, Scarecrow crashed to Earth upon arrival. This truth was hidden from most of humanity, however, and with the exception of a handful of individuals, most believed its ship to be nothing more than a super bolide meteor referred to as the Christmas Star. The crash of Scarecrow's ship caused a global catastrophe due to the enviromental effects. Upon recovery by Ben Adler and other scientists, the robot was officially given the nickname Scarecrow due to his ragged and destroyed appearance, including the metal filaments that Adler remarked looked like glowing straw. In captivity, both Scarecrow and his ship were incorporated into the design of the Resolute, where Scarecrow was enslaved to be a farmer and forced to serve as the ship's pilot. He remained there for twenty-three trips to Alpha Centauri and back before the fight between Robot and SAR somehow let it loose on the ship during the transport of the twenty-fourth colonist group. To avoid contact, the colonists evacuated the Resolute until the Robinsons, unaware of the danger, re-board the ship and later manage to contain him.

Later, during Hastings' attempt to prevent Maureen's plan to purify infected water to run the life support systems, Robot is drawn to a room where the rebellious robot Scarecrow is being stored and repeatedly electrocuted by security personnel. After overpowering the men, Robot opens the cage, revealing to Will and Penny that Scarecrow is dying. The Robinson children almost manage to get Robot and Scarecrow off the ship while avoiding the efforts of Hastings, Adler, and Smith to stop them, but Adler figures out at the last moment that Will would try to get to Jupiter 2 and cuts him off, alerting security when Will, Robot, and Scarecrow show up. Adler has a change of heart, however, when Robot pleads with him by name, crying out "Help, Ben Adler," and takes Will and Scarecrow into the Jupiter to escape while Robot prevents the guards from following. Will and Adler decide to try to save Scarecrow by bringing him to the metal ring on the Amber planet, as Robot informed them by the markings on their arms that matched those on the rings that this was where Scarecrow came from, or if he was just born there. The two succeed in locating the mark along the ring that matches the one on Scarecrow's arm, however the lightning that would supposedly heal Scarecrow was arriving far sooner than they anticipated. Adler sacrifices himself to get Scarecrow out to the mark in time, and when Scarecrow is healed, dozens of other robots are activated as well. The robots soon begin attacking the Resolute to retrieve the alien engine, leading the colonists to attach the alien engine to a transport Jupiter with all of the Resolute's children on board, with the hope that Robot could get them all to Alpha Centauri, but the robots arrive just outside the ship's airlock before it can leave. When Will steps out into the hallway in a failed attempt to convince the robots to let them go, Scarecrow attacks the robot leader before he can hurt Will and continues to fight off the other aliens as long as he can, allowing the children to launch in Jupiter T18.

Scarecrow eventually makes his way back down to the Desert, or Amber, Planet. A year later, when John, Maureen and Don land on the planet searching for the remains of SAR, Scarecrow finds and board their Jupiter, going through it, observing and scanning things, like the spacesuits. When the trio discover him, they bait and trap Scarecrow in one of the blast doors of the hab, and it becomes hostile, preparing to attack, but before anything else can happen, Robot, on the damaged Alien Planet, having led Will, June and Penny into some ruins, connect with Scarecrow, making the lights near their abdomen sections glow, and they allow the children and the trio on the Jupiter 2 communicate briefly, catching up a bit and learning they're all okay. When Scarecrow is released, Penny, through Robot and Scarecrow, hug Maureen, who is brought to tears of joy. Shortly after, the connection breaks. It then begins to help Maureen, John and Don, as well as going through some files about Ben Adler, as if remembering him and what he did, and later help them plan a way to take an Alien Engine from the Robot Spaceship which survived, though got a fair amount of scratches on it. The chariot is rigged to run at vastly increased speed, with Don having to spray coolant on the engine to prevent overheating, causing the other robots to chase it, while Scarecrow rushes into the robot ship to steal the engine, which he does. However it turns out to be a trapped laid by SAR, and Scarecrow is captured and tortured. He is then connected to Robot by SAR, who shows Will and Penny that their parents are in danger, and then snaps Scarecrows neck, killing him, and Robot collapses and displays great sorrow. Will quickly realizes from Robot's distraught state that Scarecrow is dead - and SAR is coming for all of them.
