Stuck is the fifth episode of the third season of Netflix's Lost in Space. It premiered on Netflix on December 1, 2021.

Summary[]

After crashing on a boggy planet, Maureen and Judy contend with a massive salivating creature, while John and Penny work to free the trapped Robot.

Plot[]

In a flashback, a young Maureen looks through a telescope at the night sky outside, sketching Jupiter. A woman, possibly her mother, shouts at her that the cows aren't going to feed themselves. "Someday, I'm gonna to see you up close," she thinks to herself.

On the crashed Jupiter, Judy tells her that she needs to tell her if she remembers what happened. "SAR followed us into the rift," details Maureen. "We lost power and everyone ejected." Judy says that she doesn't have slurred speech and her memory is good. She says that she's going to contact the others, but Maureen tells her to turn it off. Elsewhere, John shuts off Penny's equipment, explaining that anything electronic attracts the Robots like flies. He tells her to wait while he looks for the others. Meanwhile, Don frees Debbie the chicken from the tag on her foot. Will Robinson depowers his equipment telling Dr. Smith to do the same. Smith asks if he thinks SAR and the other Robots survived the crash. He tells her that they did. Sure enough, three of the Robots emerge from their crashed ship and begin a scouting party.

Judy and Maureen work to prep the ship in the hope of having it ready when the others arrive. Maureen tells her that of all the people to crash with, she's glad she crashed with her, asking her not to tell the others. Judy heads off to check the fuel tanks when Maureen realizes her seat rocket is still armed, meaning that she's essentially sitting on a land mine. She explains to Judy that the sensors are triggered by weight. She's safe if she stays put, but she's dead if she moves and so is Judy, as it'll spread shrapnel everywhere. It's connected by a catapult booster that can't be safely disconnected when armed. Judy suggests spraying it with liquid helium to freeze it, but Maureen says there won't be enough time to get clear. Judy asks if there's another way, but Maureen admits she doesn't know what it is right now.

She has another flashback of Judy as a baby girl. Her mother says she knows she's down about her job and Maureen that replies that she was going to be an astronaut, that it was more than just a job. Her mother tells her that life throws curveballs, but Maureen says she didn't even get through the first round of training. Her mother says she's home where she belongs, but Maureen says she's not staying. She suggests that she could use her engineering knowledge to fix the harvester and rocks Judy to sleep. Maureen asks how she did. "Finally something I know that you don't," she comments. She has Maureen sit in the rocker, telling her that babies don't stay babies forever. She says they're not about to run out of outer space and there will be other missions. Maureen says she won't risk orphaning Judy. Her mother agrees it's very sensible. Maureen tells Judy she doesn't know how to this yet, but she's smart and that Judy will be too. She says they'll figure it out. Back in the present, she tells Judy the same thing.

John reports that the Jupiter is 20 kilometers to the south and in pretty good shape. He tells Judy he saw a parachute stuck in a tree, so they know where one came down. He tells her that they'll first head to the Fortuna and get Robot and the engine. Penny asks if he saw any sign of SAR, but he says she doesn't need to worry about it. She tells him she's glad he's there. He tells her to leave her gear, that they need to move fast. Elsewhere, Don stumbles around, Debbie going ahead of him and him complaining that she's abusing her taste of freedom from him clipping her tag. He asks what she's eating, grabbing her and stopping her eating an alien worm. He says she's making poor choices. Suddenly, he is seized by something in a mud puddle and loses a boot. Debbie then rushes off, him shouting "bad chicken" after her.

Judy returns to Maureen, saying she couldn't get to the fuel tanks, but found the helium. Just then, the ship rattles and Judy realizes they're sinking. Maureen sees that something is leaking and Judy investigates. It turns out to be saliva. Maureen realizes that they're not sinking they're being swallowed. Atop the Jupiter 2 is a massive alien slug. Elsewhere, Smith complains to Will that his robot brought them to the worst place yet. Will scales a branch to try to reach a backpack. Smith tells him it's not worth it, but inside it is a skull from the alien city. He tells her he needs it for his plan. Don continues to chase after Debbie, complaining that he raised her better than this. He quips that she's grounded if they make it out of there alive. He tells her he's counting to three, only to hear footsteps approaching. Suddenly, SAR appears in front of him. He closes his eyes, bracing himself for the worst and saying he's sorry for everything bad he's done. To his great surprise, SAR only scans him with a red beam, then simply bats him to the ground.

John and Penny continue searching for Robot. They discover a safe area, undetectable by the other Robots, but John worries that the Robots could detect them if they touch even so much as a single wire. They hear a crash in the distance and discover the Robot, who has been impaled by metal. He asks for their help and they search around for something to cut it. Penny tells the Robot that it's a lot like when he first met Will, how he was in danger then too. She tells him that he's lucky he met Will, that she would never have been able to do what he did. She asked just how Will saved him, saying that for everything he told her, he never told her about that. He makes an indicating motion and she uses a tool from her belt.

The alien slug continues to try to consume the Jupiter 2. Maureen has Judy fiddle with the fuel lines in the hope of getting the creature to belt them out. Judy doesn't seem so sure, but Maureen tells her that she's Judy Robinson, that she can do anything. Judy gives it a go, but pushes it too far. Maureen says it'd be easier she could do it herself, then apologizes, saying it's making her crazy being stuck in the chair. She has another flashback, this time of reading to baby Judy from Dr. Seuss's All the Places You'll Go. As Baby Judy coos, she stares out the window at the planets and stars. She continues reading, a quiver in her voice.

Back on the Jupiter 2, there is a creaking and Maureen tells Judy to check it out. She does so and tells Maureen they're about halfway digested. Maureen asks if the rear airlock is still clear, but Judy says she's not abandoning her, that there has to be a way to get the ship out. Maureen tells her she's just saying she might not be able to go. Judy walks off. Back with Smith and Will, Smith asks Will what if something goes wrong with his plan. He tells her Robot will protect her. "What if something happens to him?" she asks, pointing out that they can't go to Alpha Centauri without the Robot. She tells him that if she really wants to help his parents to take care of them first. She asks if he doesn't want to see what it's like on Alpha Centauri too. He asks her what she thinks is waiting for her there, if all her problems will just go away. She tells him her problem is people, that they don't bring out the best in her, but on Alpha Centauri, she can find somewhere far way from everyone. She says his family deserves that too, but nobody more than him.

As John and Penny work to continue to free the Robot, an alien worm triggers a wire. "Danger," warns the Robot. Outside, SAR senses the signal. An emergency alert sounds and John realizes just what kind of danger they're in. He starts pulling wires, but to no effect. He finally manages to power everything off and Penny tells him she saw an old recording on the monitor, a weird one. They head back to the Robot, John saying that it will likely take the Robots ten to fifteen minutes to reach there. On the Jupiter 2, the slug has nearly fully consumed the vessel. Judy tells Maureen that she thinks she's found a solution, that there's a high percentage of hydroquinone in the saliva. She thinks it's like a snake, swallowing prey whole. She explains that they can release hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. Maureen points out that what's swallowing them isn't a snake, but Judy says everything is made of stardust.

In another flashback, Judy is outside with Maureen, looking through the telescope. Maureen says that Penny told her she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. "Penny doesn't know what she's talking about. She's six," replies Judy. Maureen tells her that medicine is a noble profession, as Judy recites Jupiter's moons. She tells her she can be a doctor in space, if it's what she wants, that she is Judy Robinson and can do anything. Back on the Jupiter 2, Judy recites this to herself in the mirror. She jabs herself with something in the shoulder.

As Penny and John continue to work to free the Robot, Penny says she has something to ask John about that is really important. She says it's about Vijay and Liam. He asks if she really wants to do this now, but she says it's important to her. He agrees he's listening and she tells him she's torn between the two, that she's trying to figure out who is right for her. "right for what? To be your boyfriend?" he asks. She says that nobody uses the term anymore, but yes. She explains that Vijay has the biggest heart and cares about everyone. He says it's a quality that's hard to find. She tells him that Liam has something really strong about him, that he could and did catch her if she fell off a cliff. John agrees that trust like that is also hard to find. He laughs, saying that he knows what she's doing, trying to keep his mind occupied like he used to when she was scared. She tells him that when she's with him, she's never scared. The two get back to work freeing the Robot and finally break through. Penny tells him their time is just about up and he agrees they'd better get moving.

As Judy struggles to remove the alien snake, Maureen realizes that she hurt herself in the crash. Judy admits that she fractured her shoulder and Maureen asks why she didn't tell her. Judy replies that she's handling it and Maureen asks since when she keeps things from her. "All the time, since I'm the daughter you don't have to worry about," replies Judy. Maureen says that she does worry about her and Judy asks why she would, that she's the one she'd want to be stuck with in an emergency, the perfect child. Maureen says that she never expected her to be perfect. Judy asks if this is really so and she says she just wanted her to live up to her potential. Judy says that she was trying to live up to her, to a dream that she didn't understand. She says that Maureen wanted to be an astronaut and she took it from her.

Maureen shakes her head, saying she didn't realize. As the creature growls, she tells Judy that she has to get out of there. Judy says that they're doing it together, that Maureen didn't leave her and she won't either. She then hatches a new plan: hiding inside the box that protected Dr. Smith and using the explosion from the chair to cause the creature to disengage. Judy pulls Maureen from the chair and they take shelter in the box. The creature groans and ejects the Jupiter 2. Maureen and Judy open the box, finding themselves safe. Maureen tells Judy that this is how it all began, just the two of them. Judy says that she never checked on the fuel tanks and probably should, but Maureen tells her to just rest.

Smith shouts at Will to just go and forget about the skull. She hears something coming, but Will goes for the backpack anyway. She tells him to hurry. Will reaches for the bag, only for it to fall... and be caught by the Robot. He smiles and cheers. Smith quips that she's not the only one who likes to make a dramatic entrance as Penny and John arrive. Will asks if the Robot got hurt, but Smith asks if they're really going to chat, with SAR and the others coming. John says they managed to lose them for now. He says they should go find the others. Elsewhere, Debbie pecks at the shoulder of Don, who is lying on the ground. "I guess you scared him away," he jokes. He tells her they're getting out of there, and this time he's carrying her. SAR returns to another Robot and shows him the scan him he made.
